WorkSafeBC urges construction employers to prevent falls from heights

WorkSafeBC issued a press release last week urging construction employers to take fall protection seriously. They noted more than 1,000 construction workers were injured in falls from elevation in 2024.

“Falls from elevation can happen from a roof or scaffold to a ladder or truck bed — often due to inadequate protection, not following safe-work procedures, or hazardous conditions,” says Barry Nakahara, Director of Prevention Field Services at WorkSafeBC. “But these incidents are largely preventable with proper planning, supervision, training, and consistent use of fall protection.”

ProSafe Training offers a Fall Protection course which incorporates many industry best practices and is ultimately designed to exceed industry standards. The course is available in-class with hands-on training on fall protection systems, or can be taken online-only without the hands-on training. The course also includes:

  • Fall protection measures required by the Occupational Health & Safety Regulations
  • Identifying fall protection systems and components
  • Basic principles for safe selection & use of ladders
  • Calculating Free Fall Distance and Minimum Clearance Required
  • Information on the difference between fall restraint & fall arrest systems
  • Components of personal fall protection systems & their specifications
  • Proper application of full body harnesses, lanyards & vertical lifeline rope grabs
